A brown (for now) roof

The curved roof is the location for photovoltaic panels where electricity will be generated, which in turn supports the low carbon running of the house and contribution to the wider distribution network, the brown roof is also becoming part of the landscape and is being offered as a terrain to be slowly populated by wind-born and bird dropped species which will plant themselves in the carefully balanced substrate. In time the roof will have seasonal plants growing on it like Sedums. The roofs have also been populated with site-won objects which have been placed as habitats for wildlife. The brown roof also helps to manage the “habitat” of the house itself, acting as thermal mass which will mitigate solar overheating in the summer months.
